Freemium
pricing
Freemium = a permanent free tier + opt-in paid upgrade.
Distinguished from:
- Free trial: time-limited free, then paid-only. Not freemium.
- Pay-once: no free tier at all.
- Ad-supported free: technically freemium but the “price” is your attention.
In the calorie counter category, true no-ads freemium means: free tier permanent, no card required, no nag wall. Only PlateLens does this in 2026.
Most others (MyFitnessPal, Lose It!) are technically freemium but the free tier is heavily ad-loaded and feature-restricted to push toward paid.
Related: paywall.
